The Relationship Doesn’t End at Closing

One of the things I’ve learned after nearly 40 years in this business is that a mortgage is almost never the biggest story.

Life is.

Families grow. Careers change. Parents age. Health challenges arise. Children graduate. Retirement arrives.

A mortgage may be the reason someone calls me, but it’s rarely the reason they’re moving.

Those moments shape not only where we live, but also the decisions we make and the support we need along the way.

That’s why I’ve never believed my job is simply to help someone obtain a mortgage.

It’s to be a trusted resource before, during, and long after closing.

Several years ago, I worked with a couple who needed to move because the husband’s medical condition made it impossible for them to remain in the home they loved. Together, we found financing that allowed them to purchase a home better suited to his needs and gave them peace of mind.

Sadly, not long after they moved in, he passed away much sooner than anyone expected.

His wife suddenly found herself grieving while also trying to navigate financial decisions she never imagined facing alone. She had questions about her mortgage, the life insurance proceeds, and what her financial future would look like.

Because we’d built a relationship based on trust, she knew exactly who to turn to.

We answered her mortgage questions, talked through her options, and connected her with trusted financial advisors, CPAs, and estate attorneys who could help guide her next steps.

We couldn’t take away her grief.

But we could remove some of the uncertainty.

Moments like these have reinforced something I’ve believed throughout my career.

People don’t simply need someone who can close a loan.

They need someone who will still be there months – or even years later – when life doesn’t go according to plan.

That’s why one of my favorite parts of this business is staying connected with my clients long after the paperwork is signed. I love celebrating the joyful moments, welcoming new babies and grandchildren, congratulating graduations, weddings, retirements, and new beginnings. And when life becomes unexpectedly difficult, I want my clients to know they don’t have to navigate those moments alone.

Life doesn’t pause for a mortgage.

Neither should the relationship.

Long after the loan closes, I hope every client knows they have a trusted resource they can count on whenever life takes an unexpected turn.
